No place I’d rather be…

If I could pack a bag today, where would I go?  This week that’s an easy answer…New Orleans!  Wednesday is the 4th of July, which means Victory Fellowship Church will be “Feeding the Multitudes”!!  After Katrina devastated so many in NOLA, Pastors Frank and Parris Bailey acted on a nudge from the Holy Spirit and decided TO DO SOMETHING FOR SOMEONE ELSE and stop thinking about their own problems, challenges and set backs from the storm.

Still a good lesson and reminder today.

One of my fondest memories of serving…it was our last summer in New Orleans, we were moving back to Florida the following week. Jim served in the kitchen, feeding the people, and I washed their feet. Samaritan’s Feet generously donated hundreds of shoes for us to give away. But before we replaced the old and worn out, we washed away the dirt and grime. We touched the untouchable, loved the unloveable and prayed for the people. People who God created in His own image and likeness. People who God loves dearly. People who just needed a cup of water filled with compassion. People who needed someone to care, like Jesus cared.

Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands,

and that he had come from God and was going back to God,

rose from supper.

He laid aside his outer garments,

and taking a towel, tied it around his waist.

Then he poured water into a basin

began to wash the disciples’ feet and

to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

John 13:3-5

When we KNOW who we are in Christ Jesus, we lay aside all that so easily entangles us in this world and care for those at arm’s length. Not from a far, but up close, personal.

What needs to be “Laid Aside” so you can serve, up close? Are you concerned about getting dirty? Will it ruin your manicure? Are you consumed with what others will think? You see serving like Jesus requires us to get up from the table of comfort. In the end, a neat and tidy life is an empty, fruitless life. What is God asking you to do? Do it. And do it with integrity for God is watching our every move. His eyes are upon us and he desires us to do what he has called us to do, regardless of how others perceive our actions.

He prepares a table in the wilderness, will we not willingly partake? Will we not  join him?

I sat on the floor, a very tall man sat in the chair in front of me. “I just want a pair of new shoes.” His request was simple, but I wanted to love him, like Jesus. After some urging, I removed his shoes. His toes were curled under and matted together. He wore shoes too old and too small. As I carefully washed away all that life had shamefully hurled at this man, I prayed. He wept. I broke the rules that day. He walked away with 2 pair of shoes. He seemed even taller, but maybe he just stood taller.

One day we will all stand before Jesus, as Judge. That is his deserved role, not mine. Until then, I am to respect the dignity of every human being by loving and caring for those Jesus places in my path. To “Lay Aside” my needs and serve another in real need.

There is no place I would rather be…right smack dab in the center of God’s will for my life. I’ll admit that oftentimes I understand not why I am there, but I will trust God. For truly, there is no place I’d rather be…

Happy 4th of July sweet friends! Make a memory you will never forget- serve another.
